The Front Center Airbag provides occupant protection in far side impacts. They occur when the vehicle is struck on the opposite side of where the occupant is sitting.

Providing protection in side collisions

The Front Center Airbag is placed between the driver's and front passenger's seats. It's purpose it to protect occupants in the front seats from crashing into each other during a side collision. Almost half of occupants injured in side impacts are on the opposite side to the one that is struck. Far side impacts can give rise to serious injuries, the driver can move sideways and hit the intruding structure or hit the passenger if one is present.

The Front Center Airbag Benefits

  • Protects occupants in far side impacts

  • Protects the driver from hard contacts with the vehicle interior

  • Avoids occupant interaction between the driver and the passenger

Vertical deployment for increased protection

The Front Center Airbag is normally installed on the inside of the drivers seat and deploys vertically between the two front occupants to limit the excursion of the far-side occupant and to provide protection from impact between two front seat occupants. The Front Center Airbag has a slightly curved shape, so that it won't frighten the driver if an accident happens. The airbag will only deploy in the situation of a side collision, not front or behind impact.

20+ years of far side impacts research

Autoliv has been researching far side impacts and associated injuries for over 20 years. In 2020, The European New Car Assessement Programme, Euro NCAP, included far side crash evaluation in their rating. Korean NCAP & China NCAP have followed as well and added far side evaluation to their rating schemes.
