Pre-Testing Functions

Test Method Development
Autoliv encourages early collaboration with clients to develop a specialised test program, specific to the client's needs. This early involvement is crucial to assess the regulatory safety performance and help define what is required from the restraint product or vehicle development. A tailored test method and program can then be established using design of experiments, where Autoliv's test engineers assist to design and simulate new test method concepts and equipment using state-of-the-art design tools such as PAMCRASH, MADYMO and LS-DYNA.

Test Preparation
Before performing any kind of automotive crash test the vehicle must be prepared in a precise way. Unnecessary equipment is stripped off the vehicle. Data aquisition systems are carefully installed and vital sensors mounted. The vehicle is painted in the optimally way for filming conditions. The steering system is aligned. Test dummies are installed and their positions meticulously verified. Finally, the prepared vehicle is connected to the computer-based control system from which the critical test information is gathered.

Dummy Calibration
Autoliv is equipped with a vast array of crash test dummies and has all the state-of-the-art equipment necessary to perform dummy calibration. The various dummies are equipped with sophisticated instrumentation such as accelerometers and load cells in order to accurately measure movements and impacts during the tests. The dummies and their instrumentation are regularly calibrated to ensure that all measurements are reliable both before and after tests.
