Passenger Airbags
Picture of inflated passenger airbag

The passenger airbag is located in the instrumental panel of the vehicle.

Autoliv passenger airbags are available for a whole range of customer needs. The usual cushion size varies from 90 to 150 liters.

Autoliv's Passenger Airbags are able to combine best-in-class restraint performance with reduced occupant loads – even in Out-Of-Position situations.

Components of a Passenger Airbag Module

A standard passenger airbag module consists of an inflator with an initiator, a textile bag (cushion), a housing, a deflector and a cover. Depending on the customer's requirements, pyrotechnic or hybrid inflators are used. The inflator output is highly adaptable in regards to the restraint system requirements.

The housing is typically made out of steel or out of strong, light-weight plastics. The cushion is made of nylon and folded in a specific way to make it unfold fast and safely.

Additional features like active venting or special Out-Of-Position techniques make it possible to taylor the airbag deployment for varying crash scenarios, passenger sizes and situations.

Safety-Vent Airbag

Although airbags save thousands of lives every year, they are potentially dangerous for children and other occupants who are sitting too close to a deploying frontal airbag.

To reduce this risk for children, the vehicle manufacturers install airbag suppression systems. However, these systems have several drawbacks (e.g. high costs, low accuracy and complicated installation in the seat).

Autoliv has therefore developed an airbag that automatically releases pressure should the occupant be too close to the bag. If the occupant is at a safe distance to the bag, two straps are stretched and, as a consequence, cinch their vent tubes to allow gas pressure to build up in the bag.

This Safety-Venty Airbag was introduced in 2006.
