| Autoliv Helps Cars get Top Rating in European Crash Testing Program |
| |
(Stockholm, June 30, 2004) --- In the latest tests from EuroNCAP (European New Car Assessment Programme) published last week, Autoliv – the worldwide leader in automotive safety systems – supported many car manufacturers in achieving record ratings with their new car models.
The new Renault Megane CC, for instance, not only received five stars in EuroNCAP's crash rating but it also became the first vehicle ever in the EuroNCAP testing program to achieve a full score - i.e 100% - in EuroNCAP's frontal crash test. This convertible is the first vehicle in the world (together with the 3-door version of the same model) which is equipped with an anti-sliding bag. This new airbag developed by Autoliv is installed in the seat cushion to prevent the driver from sliding under the seat belt and hitting the instrument panel. In addition, the new airbag improves the protection capability of the frontal airbag by keeping the occupant in a more upright position during the crash. Autoliv is also the supplier of all other safety systems to this top-rated car model (i.e. smart frontal airbags, side airbags for chest and head protection as well as seat belts with pretensioners for all seating positions).
Autoliv's safety systems paid off with top results for many other vehicles as well. For instance, five of the six vehicle models that achieved full score, i.e.100%, in the side-impact test have Autoliv's Inflatable Curtain for head protection. These car models are the Volvo S40, Volkswagen Golf, Saab 9-3 Convertible, Opel/Vauxhall Astra and Toyota Corolla Verso.
EuroNCAP's front-impact test is conducted at 64 km/h (40 mph) into an offset deformable barrier and the regular side-impact test with a mobile deformable barrier at 50 km/h (31 mph) and the pole side-impact test at 29 km/h (18 mph). Organisations participating in EuroNCAP include the Departments of Transportation of France, Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the European Commission.
