Our Market
With its successful growth strategy, Autoliv has become the global leader in the $18.5 billion automobile occupant restraint market. Frontal airbags account for 28% of that market, side airbags for 27%, seatbelts for 27% and electronics for 18%.

The global steering wheel market, which Autoliv entered in 1995, amounts to just over one billion dollars, excluding electronics and other features that are integrated with the steering wheel.
Pie chart showing market shares

Customers in Europe account for 54% of Autoliv's sales, customers in North America for 27%, customers in Japan for 9% and customers in the rest of the world for nearly 13%. The most important individual markets are the United States (20%), Germany (15%), France (13%), Japan (9%), Great Britain (6%), Spain (5%) and Sweden with 6% of sales.

Autoliv estimates that it currently has slightly more than one third of the global market for car occupant restraint products and that it has a somewhat higher global market share for airbags than for seatbelts. For side airbags, which were invented by Autoliv and introduced in 1994, Autoliv's global market share is still approximately 40%.

Also for other recent safety improvements, such as seatbelt pretensioners, load limiters and airbag curtains, Autoliv's global market position is strong.

In North America, Autoliv estimates that it accounts for more than one third of the airbag products market and for almost one third of the seatbelt market compared to just over 10% in 1999. Autoliv began selling seatbelts in the United States in 1993. In 2000, Autoliv acquired the North American seatbelt business of NSK. Autoliv's market share for seatbelts also increased as a result of new contracts, and the increasing number of new US vehicles with seatbelt pretensioners. Autoliv entered the US steering wheel market in 1998 and now has a market share of over 15%. The market share for safety electronics is more than 15% in North America.

In Europe, Autoliv estimates its market shares to be about 50% with a higher market share for seatbelts than for airbags. The market share for steering wheels is close to 30% and almost 25% for safety electronics.

In Japan, Autoliv has a strong position in the airbag inflator market and rapidly growing sales of airbag modules, especially of side-impact airbag modules. Local assembly of airbag modules began in 1998. In 2000, Autoliv acquired the second largest Japanese steering wheel company with a market share exceeding 20%, and in 2003 the company completed the acquisition of NSK's Asian seatbelt operations. Including NSK's sales, Autoliv accounts for nearly one fifth of the Japanese seatbelt market.
