Striving for Excellence |
Autoliv has approximately 80 wholly or partially owned manufacturing facilities in almost 30 vehicle-producing countries. The company is one of the most vertically integrated automotive safety system suppliers with in-house divisions for all key components.
In accordance with Autoliv's manufacturing strategy, component production is concentrated in a relatively few locations, while assembly plants are located close to the customers. Final products are typically delivered "just-in-time", sometimes several times a day, to a vehicle manufacturer´s plants. For some customers, Autoliv has also begun to establish "sequence centers" inside or in direct vicinity of a customer's car factory. |
|
These centers make final assembly and feed Autoliv's products into the car assembly line in the right order, i.e. in accordance with the car buyers' selections of colors and optional equipment. Almost every minute, the Autoliv sequence center receives a new order and already within two to five hours (depending on the product) the order is executed and the product delivered.
Since major automobile manufacturers are continually expanding production into more countries, it is Autoliv's strategy to have manufacturing capacity where the major vehicle manufacturers have or are likely to set up production facilities. As a consequence, Autoliv has more plants for automotive safety products in more countries than any other occupant restraint supplier.
|
Autoliv's manufacturing is highly automated, which allows for low-cost production in high-wage countries where its largest customers are located. To assure standardization and high quality as well as maintaining proprietary production technologies, Autoliv's production lines and equipment are typically developed and manufactured by Autoliv itself and its manufacturing machinery company Autoliv Automation. In accordance with its cost containment program Autoliv has, during several years, moved and allocated production to low labor-cost countries. Consequently, the Company currently has more than 50% of its headcount in such countries compared to less than 10% in 1999 when the program started.
