Seatbelts are estimated to reduce the overall risk for serious injuries in crashes by 60-70% and the risk for fatalities by about 45 percent. In non-collisions, mainly rollovers, the reduction in fatalities is about 75%. The U.S National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that in the United States alone, seatbelts save more than 11,000 lives annually, prevent over 300,000 serious personal injuries and save $50 billion every year to the U.S society. This compares favorably with the U.S seatbelt market that last year amounted to $1.3 billion.
 
To further reduce the risks, especially if the seatbelt is not correctly positioned. Autoliv has developed seatbelt pretensioners, load limiters, active seatbelts and other innovations. These seatbelt features are also instrumental in Autoliv's integrated systems, where the protective effects from the seatbelt and the airbag are optimally tuned to each other during every phase of a crash.

Autoliv started to produce 2-point static seatbelts as early as 1956 and was three years later first in the world with 3-point belts, to Volvo. Autoliv also pioneered the 3-point retractor belt in 1967 and the seatbelt pretensioner in 1986.
