Our environmental management goes beyond the legal requirements, since recyclable and environmentally friendly products are a competative tool in our industry. Since a large number of Autoliv's plants assemble products from purchased components and materials, the environmental impact of Autoliv's manufacturing is relatively minor. For instance, the emission of carbon dioxide from a typical Autoliv production facility is comparable with the carbon dioxide emissions from service companies. Nevertheless, each plant has an environmental plan for continuous improvement and continuously monitors such parameters as:
  Energy Consumption
  Chemical Impact Index
  Water Consumption
  Freight
  Use of packaging material
  Environmental training status of personnel
Autoliv's Environment Logo
The most important environmental contribution we can make is to develop low weight environmentally friendly safety systems. This reduces not only the raw material need, and thereby the environmental impact from steel mills and other plants in Autoliv´s supply chain.
It also reduces the weight of the vehicle and thereby lowers the fuel consumption and emissions from the vehicle during the vehicle's entire lifetime. With these objectives in mind, Autoliv has systematically improved its products by reducing weight while maintaining, and often improving, the products performance.
Our latest passenger airbag has 25% less weight than the previous product generation which, in turn, was 30% lighter than its predecessor. These two examples alone save 10,000 tons annually (mainly steel) and lead to a corresponding environmental improvement in our supply chain.
In 1997 Autoliv began the process of certifying its plants according to the international standard ISO 14001 for environmental Management System. Currently, close to 90% of Autoliv's facilities have been certified according to this standard. Almost 100% of Autoliv's sales come from these facilities. The few remaining plants are essentially new manufacturing facilities that have not been certified yet.
