Far Side Protection
In side impacts, occupants seated on the non-struck (far) side are almost as frequently injured as struck (near) side occupants. Therefore there is a need of far side restraints. The standard belts and inflatable curtains of today save lives also in far side crashes. Actually according to recent real-life data, the curtains are as effective preventing fatal outcome in near as in far side crashes. Possible significant improvements of protection are inboard bags (like the SSA, side support airbag), reversible and improved 3-point belts and 4-point belts (like the combination of a 3-point belt and a criss-cross belt). A standardized far side impact test method, including a far side dummy, will soon be proposed by a global research group where Autoliv is one of the partners. Understanding of the human body’s strength and weakness is essential for design of new restraint concepts. In the same way understanding of drivers and other road traffic users’ perception of real life traffic is important. Autoliv therefore do research in biomechanics and driver behavior analysis.
