Lower Body Protection For car occupants who are protected by airbags and their seatbelts, leg injuries are the most frequent problem in frontal crashes. They account for 40% of the moderate and more severe injuries to these occupants. Of the injuries, 60% are below the knee.   Knee Airbag Autoliv's knee airbag not only protects the knees (and the hips), but also reduces the risk for "submarining" (sliding under the belt). It also provides benefits for the head and chest by keeping the occupant in the proper position to receive maximum protection afforded by the regular frontal airbag. In addition, Autoliv's knee airbag allows for more functional use of the space in the vehicle's interior and a more lightweight solution than metal bars and other traditional knee protection alternatives. Autoliv introduced its knee airbag system in 1996 as the first company on the market. Autoliv knee airbags are available with deep drawn compact steel or with strong, light-weight plastic housings. The design of the housing is highly tailorable in regards of the packaging requirements. Depending on the style of the instrument panel, the knee airbag module can be designed with a visible class-A-surface or as a module that fits to an invisible instrument panel integrated airbag door. The cushion is available as a standard 2D pillow bag or as a 3D cushion, which is used for the Autoliv High Efficiency Knee Airbag which provides a further reduction in forward pelvis displacement and therefore gives additional benefit in overall performance to the entire restraint system.         Anti-Sliding Bag The Anti-Sliding Bag is installed in the front edge of the seat cushion to reduce the risk of the occupant sliding under the seatbelt in a crash.                 Without With   The system keeps the occupant´s knees and legs at a safe distance from the instrument panel and improves the protection of the seatbelts by reducing the risk for injuries to the abdomen. It also improves the protection provided by the frontal airbags by keeping the occupant in a more upright position so the occupant´s impact is against the entire bag instead of just the lower part of the bag.
