Driver Airbags
Cut through of Porsche Steering Wheel displaying Driver Airbag and Inflator

The driver airbag is located in the hub of the steering wheel.

Autoliv driver airbags are available for a whole range of customer needs. The variety of airbag modules is very large – from basic airbag modules to high end products with many additional features like:

-          active venting

-          vibration damper

-          horn function and multi functional switches

-          multiple features for advanced Out-Of-Position performance

High-tech Autoliv Driver Airbags are able to combine best-in-class restraint performance with reduced occupant loads – even in Out-Of-Position situations.

Components of a Basic Driver Airbag Module

A basic driver airbag module consists of an inflator with an initiator, a textile bag (cushion), a housing and a cover for the steering wheel. The most common inflators are pyrotechnic inflators, which contain a non-azide gas generant. During a crash, this generant is ignited and produces a harmless nitrogen-based gas.

The cushion is made of nylon and folded in a specific way to make it unfold fast and safely. It has vent holes on the back panel of the cushion to assure the correct soft landing of the car occupant in the bag. Autoliv's cushions are either sewn from purchased fabric or made directly from the yarn on the loom using Autoliv's patented one-piece-woven technology.

Deployed Driver Airbag

Autoliv´s RDS (i.e. Radial Deployment System) enable a radial deployment of the airbag cushion and therefore a complete steering wheel rim coverage, before the occupant comes in contact with the cushion. This helps to prevent the risk of injury especially for small persons sitting very close to the steering wheel. Additional features like active venting make it possible to taylor the airbag deployment for various crash scenarios, occupant sizes and situations.
